Tea at the Plaza

A couple of weeks ago I took my grandmother out for her birthday. I found a great deal on OpenTable.com for Afternoon Tea at the Plaza Hotel. Thought it would be a perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon with my grams. To my surprise, she had never stepped foot in the Plaza. I was in shock! Living in New York almost her whole life and she never saw this famous hotel. Well, it was a very special day to say the least. When I picked her up on Saturday afternoon, she was dolled up. She wore a blue suit jacket, black pants and a matching blue scarf. Mommina has class! Mommina is my invented word for her. Apparently, I was a creative child. We took the subway over to 5th Ave. When we arrived, she took off her sunglasses and WOAH, holy blue eye shadow. I didn't have the heart to tell her that she OD'd on the blue. She looked elegant none-the-less. We sat by the portrait of Eloise in bright blue chairs-yes, they did match her outfit. She was perfect for the space. We chatted over mini sandwiches, scrumptious desserts and crumbly scones. In her Puerto Rican accent, she exclaimed "Soo good." I couldn't help but smile. After our belly's were full on sweet treats and warm tea, we headed to the shopping area. Mommina selected one bag by MCM and thought it was divine. She looked at it rather strangely and the man behind the counter apparently read her mind and said "It's from Munich." My grandmother smiled, placed it down and whispered to me "that bag would cost me a months worth of my social security check." We giggled and moved onward towards the fragrances. After we had our fill, we decided to continue with the glam and headed to Bergdorf Goodman. As we strolled in the handbag section, I described each designer and its' origin. As we walked through, I couldn't help but stare at my grandmother. She has such class and elegance in this tough sort of way. She fits into any scenario and plays the part well. I would take a million of those days with her and I hope I get the chance. Here's to you Mommina!
