ICE CREAM TIME!

I think any time is ice cream time. I love the cold and cream treat. Makes me smile from ear to ear. Well, why not have it delivered fresh to your door! Milk Made Ice Cream is a NYC based company that delivers fresh pints of ice cream once a month for your enjoyment. The membership fee is $50 for a limited three month membership. The price is a little steep, but who can really put a price on delicious home-made ice cream? This deal was totally made for me. I guess I'll have to wait till it reaches Queens. womp womp

The last day...

When my friend Connie, name has been changed, saw my mother leaving in an ambulance, little did I know that would be the last time I would see her. While I was at school, I anticipated coming home to protect my mother. She was very ill the night before. She was talking gibberish with my grandmother in the room. She was talking about books that could not found. I tried covering for her because I knew if my grandmother heard she would send my mother straight to the hospital. But my grandmother knew exactly what was happening.

When I approached the apartment my mother was already on the stretcher and on the way out. I screamed and cried. It hurt so badly to see her go and for some reason I knew this was the last time I would see her. A few days later I went to the hospital for a visit. It was a Sunday afternoon and instead of an outing for brunch my family and I were out to see a very ill woman. I say ill woman because she was not the person I once knew. She was so weak. I couldn’t see the difference between her body and the bed. She looked so much worse than I remember her. She gave me one look over and had no idea who I was. I began to cry. How did my own mother not know who I was? I was her daughter, “I’m your daughter!” I wanted to shout. Nurse Molly sent me out of the room. Since the first day my mother found out her diagnosis, Molly had attended her. She was a friend and I trusted her to tell me the truth. She offered to get me some ice cream from a local shop. We talked about my mother and how she was very ill and her memory was slowly deteriorating. She told me what to expect and if I was prepared for my mother's death. My mother had already spoken to me about her leaving me and not being around. She already told me to be a big girl and to make her proud.

Back at the hospital, Molly brought me into the room. This time my mom was ecstatic to see me. She called me by my nickname, tuti. I was so happy that she remembered me. It made that visit that much better.

A little about my life... Part 1

I've decided that each Friday, I will try and tell a story about myself. Some may be interesting, some may not be and I will try my best to make it the former. So here we go...

This morning I was on the bus and for some reason I flashbacked to the age of 7 to this one specific incident.

Someone I knew (I'll name her Maria) was out on a date with her boyfriend (we'll call him Fred). Little did she know that the other guy that she was seeing, Abe, was spying on her outside of her apartment building. Abe found out she had been dating someone else and he was destroyed by this news. Abe really loved Maria and wanted to be with her always and forever. He was such a great guy. He would buy her anything she desired, he cooked for her and he loved her daughter. It was a perfect situation. However, Maria was a party girl. She liked to break the rules; she liked to play with fire. Well, sometimes when you play with fire, you can get burned.

Abe was sitting outside waiting for Maria to come home with this other guy. He waited for hours. I remember it was a cold night. I felt bad for him because I knew his heart was breaking and he hoped the rumors were not true.

Now Fred was a terrible person. He was no good for Maria. He took advantage of her innocents and treated her like any other. He did not make her feel special as Abe did. Abe was more caring and honest compared to Fred. Why can't some women see this? Why can't they see the good and leave the bad? Are they looking for an adventure? Sometimes you just have to know when to stop looking.

Maria finally came home. I don't know what happened outside, but I was there when the fight broke out inside. Abe was furious. He confronted Maria and demand that she explain. Maria was shocked. She couldn't believe he was spying on her. She was yelling back at him saying, "how dare you!" Abe was a guy in love. He was heartbroken. You can't blame the guy but I could say he went to an extreme. He pinned Maria down and yelled in her face and repeated, "how could you do this to me!" We all watched. What could I do, mind you I was 7. I was so upset for them both.

I made sure the door was locked so that Fred wouldn't dare enter. I knew Fred was no good and maybe this would finally be the last I would see of him. Fred begged to come in as Maria was getting berated and belittled.

As an outsider looking in, the situation was tough to understand and judge. Who could blame Abe; hopelessly in love. But, who could blame Maria; after all, she had no commitment to either one. Who's wrong in the situation? Maria-for not being honest? Or Abe for assuming his relationship?

The situation ended with Abe leaving crying and heartbroken. Maria, embarrassed with tears streaming down her face. In the end, Maria lost Abe and flew to Fred for comfort.

Things I've seen and heard on the Subway today...

A man sitting next to me was giving his friend on the phone relationship advice. Telling him that his girl needs to work. "Love don't pay the bill!"
A woman clipping her fingernails. When did the subway become a beauty parlor?
A chubby boy slipped and fell on his sisters’ stroller and broke the wheel. I know it's bad, but I couldn't stop laughing. He looked so surprised and innocent. He tried to explain to his mother that he could fix it as she was yelling at him in Spanish.
Oh the joy ride didn't end there. When I got off the subway and onto the streets of NYC, a taxi was pulled over with his blinkers on, while a car behind him was honking for him to move. Meanwhile, she could easily go around him. Why bother, why not cause a scene and honk for all to see how stupid you look.

Ah New York...

Indulgent!

My aunt requested a chocolate caramel pie by Saveur over the weekend. I happily accepted the challenge and proceeded to make her this scrumches pie. It looked absolutely amazing and I couldn't eat one crumb of it. I gave up chocolate for lent. =( It was absolute torture! I love my aunt, so I'm glad I was able to make her happy.

I made a few alterations to cut time and I didn't have certain ingredients.

Chocolate Caramel Tart
by Saveur (alterations by moi)

FOR THE CRUST: (Store bought chocolate crust)

1 1⁄2 cups flour
1⁄4 cup plus 1 tbsp. dutch-process unsweetened
cocoa powder
1⁄4 tsp. kosher salt
10 tbsp. unsalted butter, cubed and softened
1⁄2 cup plus 2 tbsp. confectioners' sugar
2 egg yolks, preferably at room temperature
1⁄2 tsp. vanilla extract

FOR THE CARAMEL

1 1⁄2 cups sugar
3 tbsp. light corn syrup I forgot to purchase so I used condensed milk
1⁄4 tsp. kosher salt
6 tbsp. unsalted butter
6 tbsp. heavy cream
1 tbsp. crème fraîche or sour cream

FOR THE GANACHE

1⁄2 cup heavy cream
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped (I used semi-sweet chips)
Gray sea salt for garnish

1. Make the crust: Heat oven to 350˚. Combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside. Using a handheld mixer, cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until mixture is pale and fluffy; mix in yolks and vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients. Transfer dough to a 9" fluted tart pan with a removable bottom and press dough evenly into bottom and sides of pan. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Prick the tart shell all over with a fork and bake until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool.

2. Make the caramel: In a 1-qt. saucepan, whisk together sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 6 tbsp. water and bring to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer inserted into the syrup reads 340°. Remove pan from heat and whisk in butter, cream, and crème fraîche (the mixture will bubble up) until smooth. Pour caramel into cooled tart shell and let cool slightly; refrigerate until firm, 4–5 hours.

3. Make the ganache: Bring cream to a boil in a 1-qt. saucepan over medium heat. Put chocolate into a medium bowl and pour in hot cream; let sit for 1 minute, then stir slowly with a rubber spatula until smooth. Pour ganache evenly over tart and refrigerate until set, 4–5 hours. Sprinkle tart with sea salt, slice, and serve chilled.

Good Coaching

I've never been a huge fan of Coach; although, I do own one handbag.
Perhaps I've never been a huge fan because I can pick out a Coach bag from a mile away. I feel that bags should be a bit mysterious, just as the woman holding the bag. Having your identity out in the open is way too blatant. Do you go up to a random person and say "Hi, I'm Chloe"? So why should your bag have to scream, "Hi, I'm Coach. You can tell by my giant C." Not anymore- Coach came out with a chic line called Kristin. Have no fear monogram lovers; there are some new styles for you too. However, I'm enjoying their play on style with smooth leather and textured python. These bags no longer scream "Coach," but they do scream "Come Hither."

Parli Italiano?

A creative jewlery line called Prediletto, which mean "favorite" in Italian has hit the fashion world. This past weekend, T Magazine featured Prediletto and explains that this line is inspired by views of Versailles and views of Venice. I'd love to wear anything inspired by Versailles. If you've never been, you must plan a trip. You will be in awe of the spectacular art work and bright facade. In addition to, the fantastic gardening and wonderous fountains. No wonder there is an inspired jewlery line.

Hermès...here we come!

It's funny because the other day I was reading an article in the W magazine regarding Tory Burch and she mentions how her father always wore a Hermès handkerchief. So I thought, how come I've never shopped at Hermès? Well, I will be soon. According to Racked NY, Hermès is having a March Madness sale from March 24th to March 28th. Racked NY mentions 40%-60% off ready-to-wear items, not including bags. Not sure what that means for me, but it will be an experience none-the-less.
